Why choose Voss for your ski holiday

Voss does skiing the Norwegian way: mountains, snow, big views and plenty of fresh air, all wrapped around a genuine mountain town.

People have been skiing here for generations. One of Norway’s first lifts opened at Bavallen in 1947, and since then Voss has hosted World Cup alpine championships and produced a long line of Norwegian freestyle and freeride skiers. Today, you can arrive by train in the morning and be heading uphill in the gondola minutes later.

Here’s why Voss works so well for a ski holiday

  • Ski straight from the town centre
The gondola leaves beside Voss railway station and reaches Hangurstoppen in under nine minutes. Better still, it is included in every lift pass.
  • Five areas, one large playground on the mountain
Explore Hangurstoppen, Tråstølen, Slettafjellet, Horgaletten and Bavallen, with plenty of variety for a full day on the snow and a 535-metre vertical descent in a single run.
  • Keep skiing after dark
Around 11 km of pistes light up for night skiing, from easy greens to black runs. On a short break, that means you can squeeze even more skiing into every day.
  • Turn a weekend into a proper ski trip
Fly to Bergen from London Gatwick, Manchester, Aberdeen and Edinburgh, hop on the train to Voss and go to the accommodation. Thursday to Sunday are suddenly very busy.
  • Keep the fun going when the lifts stop
Swim, bowl, eat, drink, explore the town or head out on a fjord adventure. Flåm and the fjords are within easy reach for a day off the skis.
  • Enjoy a long Norwegian winter
The season typically runs from mid-December to mid-April, with the higher slopes often holding snow well into spring.

Great for: families, mixed-ability groups, intermediate skiers, weekend adventurers and anyone who wants to spend more time outside and less time organising transfers.

Looking for hundreds of kilometres of linked pistes and Alpine après? Voss is a different kind of ski trip: smaller, easier, more relaxed and unmistakably Norwegian!

Getting here – 1 hour from Bergen

Getting to Voss is refreshingly easy.

Instead of finishing your journey on a winding mountain-road transfer, you travel through western Norway by train and arrive right beside the gondola.

By air and rail

  1. Direct flights are available from London Gatwick, Manchester, Aberdeen and Edinburgh. Flight time is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
  2. Take the Bybanen light rail or airport bus into Bergen city centre — around 45 minutes to the railway station.
  3. Jump aboard the Bergen–Voss train, which runs hourly and takes 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes.
  4. Step off at Voss and walk straight to the gondola. It is right beside the station.

Realistic door-to-slope time from a UK airport: 6–7 hours. No hire car. No mountain coach transfer. Just get here, gear up and go skiing.

By road: Voss is 99 km from Bergen along the E16, about 1 hour 30 minutes. Bavallen is 5 km from the city center and has parking spaces. Remember that the car must have tires with sufficient tread.

From Oslo: take the Bergen Line for around 5h 30m and make the journey part of the trip. It is one of Europe’s great railway rides, crossing high mountain landscapes on the way west.

When to go – Half term, Christmas, New Year & Easter

Winter in Voss changes character throughout the season. Come for dark December evenings under the floodlights, crisp February snow or long, bright spring days on the mountain.

  • Christmas & New Year ski holidays
Snowy mountains, glowing lights and evening skiing make midwinter especially atmospheric. Book by December — cabins tend to go first.
  • February half term
Proper winter conditions, longer days and plenty of time to ski from first lift to last. A great choice for families looking for a half term ski holiday in Norway.
  • Easter skiing
This is a Norwegian classic. Think longer days, spring snow, sunshine terraces and a whole lot of people making the most of the mountains.
  • Short breaks and long weekends
March and the beginning of April are normally a perfect time for a three- or four-night trek in Norway. With long, bright days, you get extra much time to enjoy the slopes, the fjords, and the best of winter.
  • Off-peak January
Cold snow, quiet pistes and some of the best-value skiing of the season.
