Five popular mountain hikes in Voss Resort
Hangurstoppen, 818 metres above sea level, is the starting point for many of the area’s best hikes. If you are among the most eager, you can begin by walking up from the centre of Voss. If you prefer to get up more quickly, we recommend starting your adventure with the gondola. Enjoy the majestic views along the way – in just nine minutes you will be transported straight to the top.
If one of your goals is to capture Instagram friendly holiday photos in the beautiful nature of Western Norway, this is the place to be. The view is stunning in every direction. Try one or more of these five mountain hikes in Voss this year
1. Lønahorgi – with a view of the glacier
- Level: Demanding, big children and adults
- Length/time: 8.5 km, approx. 6-8 hours round trip (depending on fitness and speed)
- Type: Path and terrain, uphill
Lønahorgi (1410) is a popular hiking destination starting from Voss Resort. A wonderful hike where you can use your legs well and enjoy the view from the top. It is best to start from either Hanguren or Bavallen.

From Hangurstoppen, follow the T-marked path and signs towards Lønahorgi. The path goes via the Røde Kors hut and holds the height that crosses the ski lift on Slettafjellet. The path then goes up the ridge towards Horgaletten, Kvilehytta and on to Lønahorgi.
From the top, on clear days, you can see as many as four glaciers (Fresvikbreen, Hardangerjøkulen, Vossaskavlen and Folgefonna) and you can see beautiful western peaks as far as the eye can see.
This hike is for those with a bit more stamina, as it is a demanding hike of about 20 km round trip that takes about 6-8 hours, depending on where you start from. From Bavallen to Lønahorgi there is about 1100 meters of elevation gain.
The route is marked for summer and goes through high mountain terrain. Therefore, bring equipment such as a map and compass and be prepared for changing weather. Remember good shoes and dress for the weather.

2. Skutsgardstjørni – view of Vossabygda

From here the path goes down in easy terrain towards the pond Skutsgardstjørni with a great view over Vossabygda. Here too there are good photo opportunities. Continue following the path until it meets the alpine slope and the gravel road. Walk steeply uphill along the alpine trail and the gravel road back towards Hangurstoppen where you started.
3. Red Cross hut, hub for other trails
- Level: Simple, everyone

The Red Cross hut is a popular hiking destination. From Hangurstoppen you can choose to either walk the trail in the terrain, or follow the gravel road/gravel path. You can also start the hike in Bavallen.
The Red Cross hut is located right next to Valbergstjørni, a popular and beautiful place for swimming. The hut is also a hub for a number of other trails for those who want to continue into the mountains.
