Nils Een – a love story written in snow

In 1959, Nils Een was given a place in the World Cup race in Voss through the organisers’ quota. Since then, he has won several Norwegian Championship titles and represented Norway in many competitions. Like a true Vossing, he is happy every single day he can put on his skis and glide downhill. Join him as he looks back on his years as an alpine skier and lifelong ski enthusiast.

Self-made slopes

The first lift built was Bavallsheisen. Grooming machines did not exist at the time, so Nils and his friends from the local sports club had to prepare the slopes themselves. It was time-consuming work, and the boys almost became “too good” at preparing their own slopes.

– We almost became better at trekking than skiing. It was simply part of the environment – we didn’t know anything else – that’s just how it was,” says Nils.

He has always been active and passionate about alpine skiing. Even though he was not at his peak when he was given the chance to take part in the World Cup in Bavallen, the opportunity gave him enormous motivation to continue his dedication to the sport.

Cooperation and community

The fact that Voss Resort is now one of the country’s best ski resorts is the result of strong cooperation between local sports clubs and the resort itself. It was, among other things, the sports community in Voss that initiated the development of both the giant slalom and downhill slopes.

– It is only a guess, of course, but I do not think Voss would have been what it is today without sport and the strong cooperation that has developed over many years,” says the ski enthusiast

A love for skiing with no expiry date

Almost as old as Voss Resort itself, Nils may now be in the veteran category, but he still loves skiing fast and is happy to take part in races whenever the chance arises. For example, he won three gold medals at the Norwegian Veteran Championships in 2015.

– I still look forward to every day I get to ski. And we should be grateful for that, I think,” concludes Nils.
