Experience spectacular paragliding at Voss!

Voss is one of the most famous paragliding destinations in Norway. From Hangurstoppen, the paragliders take off high in the mountains, and you can watch them soar elegantly over the village before landing at Vangsvatnet in the center.

This makes Voss a unique place to watch paragliding:

  • The gondola takes pilots straight from Voss city center to Hangurstoppen in under 9 minutes.
  • Large differences in altitude make for long and beautiful flights.
  • Many flight routes and good conditions make it active throughout much of the year.
  • The main landing is located right next to Vangsvatnet.

If you take the gondola up, you can often see the pilots getting ready for takeoff right next to the Hangurstoppen Restaurant. From here you get a great view as they take off over the mountainside.

At the bottom of the city center you can see the lands by Vangsvatnet – a popular gathering point especially on nice summer and spring days.

For paraglider pilots

Voss is one of the most used and popular airports in Norway, with a wide range of conditions that suit both experienced pilots and those who want good distance conditions. Here you will find most everything a pilot needs.

Advantages of flying at Voss

  • Gondola from 56 m above sea level to Hangurstoppen (820 m above sea level) in under 9 minutes
  • East-facing main start with good winter hanging conditions
  • South-facing start with good thermals
  • About 600 m elevation difference
  • Main landing at Vangsvatnet in the city center
  • Good distance opportunities in several directions

Main start – east facing

Located along the Hanguren Panorama, near Hangurstoppen Restaurant.

  • Best time: approx. 10–11 am on nice winter and spring days.
  • Winter: Light easterly wind provides stable hang.
  • From March: good opportunities for thermals on clear days.
  • Note: The starting area can be uneven in the summer.

NB: Always keep a good clearance to the gondola and cables.

South-facing start

Approximately 200 meters to the right of the old Hangurs restaurant.

  • A gentle and beautiful grassy slope that ends in a clear triangle.
  • Often set up good thermals on the mountainside.
  • Typical bubbles:
    • Early: left corner of the start, by the wind sausage
    • Later: above the elevator mast below the Hangursrestaurant

NB: Same rule: keep good clearance to the gondola and cables.

Afternoon conditions

  • Sunset breezes often give crosswinds.
  • Makes takeoffs and landings more demanding.
  • Keep an eye on Vangsvatnet for signs of a change in the wind.
  • Fly down in time to avoid difficult landing conditions.
